Wotton-Under-Edge to Hawkesbury Upton

The route follows water out of Wotton-under-Edge before climbing toward the escarpment near Newark Park, a National Trust property occupying a former Tudor hunting lodge. From the high ground the path descends by a sunken track toward Alderley, a small village in quiet farmland.

The trail continues through a sheltered valley where medieval ridge-and-furrow earthworks remain visible in surrounding fields, then follows a millstream near Lower Kilcott. A final climb leads to the Somerset Monument, a tower erected in 1846 in memory of Lord Edward Somerset and his role at the Battle of Waterloo, before the stage finishes at Hawkesbury Upton. Total ascent on this section is considerable despite a moderate distance.
