Cleeve Hill to Dowdeswell

South of Cleeve Hill the route remains on the highest stretch of the whole National Trail, with far-reaching views over Cheltenham and the Severn plain. The path crosses Bill Smylie's butterfly reserve and continues along the western edge of the escarpment through open grassland, quiet lanes, and increasing areas of woodland.

The stage descends through Dowdeswell Wood to the reservoir area, where the stream supports habitat for the rare white-clawed crayfish. Walkers may finish at Dowdeswell for a quieter overnight stop close to the path, or continue into Cheltenham, which offers a wider range of accommodation, transport links, and services. Leckhampton Hill, with its limestone geology, wildflower-rich grassland, and the Devil's Chimney outcrop, lies on the escarpment above Cheltenham and is reached on the following stage.
