Stage 1The opening section leaves Chipping Campden, a market town noted for its honey-coloured stone buildings, medieval market hall, and High Street. The route climbs steadily onto the Cotswold escarpment, with increasingly wide views across the Vale of Evesham. Dover's Hill, an open stretch of common land on the scarp, is associated with the Cotswold Olimpicks, a local sporting tradition held here each year.
From Dover's Hill the path follows the escarpment through a mix of open fields and woodland before reaching Broadway Tower, a landmark standing at around 1,024 feet (312 m) above sea level. On clear days the view from the tower extends across a broad sweep of countryside. The stage finishes with a descent into Broadway, a village with a wide High Street, historic stone buildings, and strong Arts and Crafts associations.
