A volunteer-restored steam and diesel heritage line of about 14 miles, from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway via Winchcombe and Toddington.
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) runs for about 14 miles between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway, calling at Winchcombe and Toddington. It uses part of the former Great Western Railway main line from Birmingham to Cheltenham via Stratford-upon-Avon. British Rail closed the route in 1979 and later lifted the track; volunteers have been restoring the line, stations, locomotives, and rolling stock since 1981. Services are often steam-hauled, with diesel used on some days.
Broadway station is the northern terminus. The original station was demolished in 1963; volunteer rebuilding brought passenger trains back on 30 March 2018, 58 years after the last departure. The main building on Platform 1 includes a booking hall, toilets, and a refreshment room, with a volunteer-run shop on operating days. Platform 2 remains a worksite and is not yet open to the public.
The station sits on the north-western edge of Broadway, about three-quarters of a mile (a 15-minute walk) from the village centre, postcode WR12 7DF. Scheduled trains and special events typically run from March to October, with additional services around Christmas. Tickets can be bought in advance on the railway website or at stations on the day. Confirm timetables, accessibility, and parking before you travel - a council pay-and-display car park lies a short walk from the entrance, and Blue Badge spaces at the station yard are limited.
For Cotswold Way walkers the line is an easy rest-day outing from Broadway, Winchcombe, or Cheltenham: combine a short walk or taxi hop with a return trip along the valley.
