On 1 July 2021, volunteers completed restoration of more than 400 metres of dry stone wall running parallel with the Cotswold Way at Hanging Hill. Cotswolds National Landscape Voluntary Wardens from the Avon Valley district spent about three years on the project - over 6,000 hours of work in total.
Before work began, much of the wall was overgrown and hard to appreciate from the path. Clearing both sides and rebuilding the stonework has opened clearer views out over the escarpment toward Bristol, the Severn Estuary, and the distant Black Mountains.
Projects like this show how much of the trail's character depends on steady volunteer effort - from walls and gates to waymarking. If you walk this stretch on the approach to Bath, give yourself a moment at the wall to enjoy the panorama you helped keep open simply by supporting the route.
