Cycling

Sections of the National Trail are footpath-only; please use appropriate cycle routes.

Cycling is one of the best ways to explore the Cotswolds. It is accessible for a wide range of riders and beginner friendly when planned around quieter lanes and manageable daily distances. Compared with walking, cycling lets you cover more ground while still moving at a pace that feels connected to the landscape.

The region has an extensive network of minor roads, village lanes, and signed cycle routes. Traffic levels vary by location and time of day, but many of the most rewarding links are on quieter backroads between market towns and smaller settlements. Road surfaces can be mixed, so sensible route choice and tyre setup make a real difference to comfort.

Riding also gives easy access to many cultural highlights along the way: historic town centres, churches, manor houses, viewpoints, and village stops for food and drink. You can ride between highlights efficiently, then spend more time exploring each place on foot once you arrive.

Bike tours

If you prefer a structured itinerary, local operators can arrange guided and self-guided bike tours with route planning, accommodation support, and practical trip logistics.

Note: the National Trail itself includes footpath-only sections; cycle routes generally use nearby lanes and approved rights of way.
